Yakushima - The Forest Spirit by  Raphael Olivier

Yakushima Island, Japan, is home to some of the oldest patches of forest in the world and listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Made famous through the animation film of Hayao Miyazaki: Princess Mononoke, the visual reality of Yakushima seems almost as unreal as the movie.

Statuette of the god Anubis facing a kneeling worshiper

The piece has been cast in three sections and then joined. The eyes of Anubis are inlaid with gold and there are traces of gilding on the shoulders, wrists, ankles, neck, wig, and ears. The gilding was delicately applied to the eyes, eyebrows and muzzle, but in other areas it appears to have been applied in a more careless fashion. A hieroglyphic inscription runs around the main base, the base of the Anubis figure and along the back pillar of the worshiper, identifying the dedicant as one Wdja-Hor-resnet, son of Ankh-pa-khered, who is asking for the blessings of the god Anubis.

Third Intermediate Period to Late Period, 25th-26th dynasty, ca. 747-525 BC. Now in the Walters Art Museum.

Griots: A Sword and Soul Anthology (2011)

The tales told in Griots are the annals of the Africa that was, as well as Africas that never were, may have been, or should have been. They are the legends of a continent and people emerging from shadows thrust upon them in the past. They are the sagas sung by the modern heirs of the African story-tellers known by many names – including griots.

Sarcophagus of the Priest Nesschutefnut dated between 350-30 BCE on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna

Both parts of the coffin are well-smoothed inside and outside and are covered with superbly worked reliefs and hieroglyphic inscriptions. Texts and illustrations are taken from the so-called cave book, an underworld book, which describes the journey of the sun god, Ra, through the underworld.

The inside of the coffin cover shows the heavenly goddess groove, which the sun swallows every evening and gives birth to it the next morning. The goddess of the West, Hathor, can be seen at the bottom of the coffin, with its arms up to embrace the dead.

This image from 1960 is of real particle tracks formed in CERN’s first liquid hydrogen bubble chamber to be used in experiments. It was a tiny detector by today’s standards at only 32 cm in diameter. Negatively charged pions with an energy of 16 GeV enter from the left. One of them interacts with a proton in the liquid hydrogen and creates sprays of new particles, including a neutral particle (a lambda) that decays to produce the “V” of two charged particle tracks at the centre. Lower-energy charged particles produced in the interactions spiral in the magnetic field of the chamber. The invention of bubble chambers in 1952 revolutionized the field of particle physics, allowing real particle tracks to be seen and photographed, after releasing the pressure that had kept a liquid above its normal boiling point.
