Ikeda Kōsuke

Celestial Fireworks: Into Star Cluster Westerlund 2

What if you could go directly to a cluster where the stars are forming? This animation was done with 3D computer modeling of the region around the star cluster Westerlund 2, based on Hubble Space Telescope images in visible and infrared light. Westerlund 2 covers about 10 light-years and is about 20 thousand light years distant towards the constellation Keel of the ship (Carina). As the illustrative animation begins, the larger Gum 29 nebula fills the screen with the young group of bright stars visible in the center. Stars pass your finger as you approach the cluster. Soon, your imaginary vessel rotates and you pass over the interstellar gas and dust pillars during the light year. Strong winds and radiations from young, massive stars destroy all but the densest clumps of dust, leaving these pillars in their shadows - many pointing back to the center of the cluster. Lastly, you move to the top of the set of stars and search hundreds of the most gigantic stars known.

Botany and Cool Shit: Trachyandra

No, you’re not in the Celtic Otherworld, the Emerald Dream, or Wonderland. These little shits actually exist!

The genus Trachyandra is native to Eastern, Southern, and Southeastern Africa as well as Madagascar and up to Yemen. Their “weed smoke drifting in the breeze” appearance is an adaptation to the hot, dry regions they call home.

Many species are propagated and sold as houseplants, but it’s still a pretty rare find in US markets.

Remember to follow my blog if you want more bizarre, freaky and unusual plants, or if you want ideas for a sustainable lifestyle to adopt before we crash and burn our entire planet! =D

Not my images by the way.

P.S. Put this shit on your kitchen table to remind yourself of that time you tried shrooms or went on a spiritual journey to commune with nature!

gorgeousgeology:

Madagascar, Tsingy. These knife-like limestone formations stretch over 70 meters into the air. Known as The Forest Of Knives, these razor-sharp limestone points can slice through equipment and flesh easily, which makes traversing them extremely difficult and dangerous, some climbers have been known to get through over 15 pairs of boots! It is estimated that the Tsingy has the largest underground cave system in the world and many animals live among the endless maze of disorienting corridors, humid caves, and unforgiving razors at the ground level.
