Kotobuki ‘Fantastic Beast of Good Fortune’ Enrosai Shigemitsu, c. 1845 The kotobuki is an auspicious chimera whose body contains parts from all twelve animals of the zodiac. It has the head of a rat, the ears of a hare, the horns of an ox, the comb of a rooster, the beard of a sheep, the mane of a horse, the neck of a dragon, the back of a boar, the shoulders and belly of a tiger, the front legs of a monkey, the rear legs of a dog, and the tail of a snake.
A bokor (male) or caplata (female) is a Vodou prayer for hire who is said to serve the loa “with both hands”, practicing for both good and evil
Bokors are similar to the “root workers” of Vodou and New Orleans voodoo. Some may be priests of a Vodou house. Bokor are usually chosen from birth, those who are believed to bear a great ashe (power).
In traditional African religions pure good or evil don’t really exist. Hence Africans never believed in the Devil.
Africans looked at the things by polarity. What is considered good and bad depends on your position at the time.
If a you are drowning because of a flood, the water is against you at that time.
At the same time flood brings destruction it brings resurrection
A gun is neutral, its the intent in which it is used
Africans we feel Amun or Chukwu never created anything evil in nature.
A Bokor is very similar, If my crops are not growing, I would pay a Bokor for growth.
If some crooked cops killed my daughter, I would prayer for harm against my enemies.
